A visa is a permission granted to a foreigner to enter and remain in the United Republic of Tanzania for a specific period of time. A visa is issued to a visitor, who intends to enter into the country for the purpose of visit, tourism, leisure, holiday, business, health treatment, attending the conference, or any other related activities recognized by the laws of the United Republic of Tanzania.
Any foreigner seeking to enter the United Republic of Tanzania is subject to the following entry requirements:
◾ A passport or Travel Document which is valid for not less than six months;
◾ A Residence Permit or a Pass or his name is endorsed upon the same;
◾ A valid Visa (where applicable).
Upon complying with the entry requirements, a visitor is issued with a Visa or a Visitor's Pass with validity not exceeding three months.
All foreigners intending to reside in the United Republic of Tanzania for business, work, investment or any other acceptable purpose for a period of more than 90 days, are required to hold a residence permit from Tanzania Immigration Department. Basically, there are three types of residence permits, namely:-
◾ Class A: For self –employed foreigners (investors)
◾ Class B: For expatriates working in a company/ private institutions.
◾ Class C: For other class of foreigners such as researchers, retired persons, Missionaries, Volunteers etc.
TYPES OF VISA
Ordinary Visa (Single Entry Visa): This Visa is issued for a single entry to a visitor for a period not exceeding three months for the purpose of holidays, tourism, visiting, leisure, short time health treatment or any other activity legally recognized by the Law of the United Republic of Tanzania.
Multiple Entry Visa: This Visa is issued to persons whose nature of their businesses or circumstances require them to make frequent visits to the United Republic of Tanzania. The maximum validity of this Visa is twelve months. However, the holder of the Multiple Visa cannot stay in the country for 12 consecutive months. They are required to leave the country at least after every three months.
Transit Visa: This visa may be issued to a person for the purpose of transiting to another destination outside the United Republic of Tanzania for a period not exceeding seven days. The applicant of this visa is required to hold a visa of the destination country.
Business Visa: Business visa will be issued once to foreigners so as to allow them to enter in the United Republic of Tanzania for the following purposes related to carrying any business.
Gratis Visa: Student visa is granted to foreign national who enters the Country for the purpose of Academic conducts such as Research Students, Intern, Volunteering, EAC Students, Exchange students (EAC and Exchange students are free of charge) and Prospective Students admitted in recognized and legally registered Institutions. This Visa may be issued for a period not exceeding two years.
Student Visa: This visa may be issued for a single entry or multiple entries to a holder of diplomatic, services or official passport or Travel Document of recognized International Organization who is on official duty and their Dependents. It can be also issued to a holder of ordinary passport or Travel document as it may be directed by the Commissioner General of Immigration and Commissioner of Immigration Zanzibar.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR VISA An application of Visa should be accompanied with the following;
◾ Application forms duly filled in.
◾ Certified copy of the applicant’s valid passport.
◾ Attached soft copy of applicant’s photo (passport size).
